DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University women's soccer opened up its season at home against Berry College with 90 minutes of scoreless action.
The Cougars (0-0-1) welcomed the Vikings (0-1-1) to the friendly confines of Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium for the team's first contest of the new season. 90 minutes of play ensued on a hot and humid Sunday afternoon in Danville, Virginia, and while the sunshine poured onto the field, Berry tried its best to pour goals into the Cougars' net.
The Vikings amassed shot after shot in the game, 29 in total, with 11 requiring attention from the Cougars' keeper. Senior
Tiffany Hargett answered the call for Averett as she stopped all 11 shots sent on target. Possession stayed in Berry's favor for the majority of the day as Averett opted to sit low and play for the counter attack. The Cougars' best opportunity of the game would arise in just that fashion, as senior
Celia de Diego broke free and laced a ball towards the Viking's net, forcing Berry's goalkeeper into action. The second of Averett's two shots on goal came courtesy of freshman
Abigail Poole in her debut.
Defense won out in this one as Averett weathered the storm thanks to terrific back line play from the starting defensive unit of graduate student
Clarice Peters as well as seniors
Candace Johnson,
Asia Williams, and
Raylei Smith. Junior
Mackenzie Overly and freshman
Taylor Parks kept up the stellar performance in their appearances off the bench for the Cougars and earn a clean sheet for their efforts.
Averett is set to take on Greensboro College in its next contest, with kickoff scheduled for Saturday, September 7 at 1 p.m. on the Cougars' home turf.
