Women's volleyball falls to Wittenberg, Oglethorpe on Day 1 of Berry Invitational

ROME, Ga. – Averett University (2-7, 0-0 ODAC) volleyball faced tough competition at the Rome Invitational on Friday, Sept 13, falling 3-1 to both Wittenberg University (4-3, 0-0 NCAC) and Oglethorpe University (6-3, 0-1 SAA).

In their first match, the Cougars struggled against a strong Wittenberg squad, dropping the first two sets 25-10 and 25-14 before bouncing back with a 25-16 win in the third. Despite their efforts, Wittenberg closed out the match with a 25-19 victory in the fourth set. Fifth year Destiny McIntosh led Averett with 7 kills, and fifth year Erin Gray contributed 21 digs. Sophomore Allie Wilkerson also chipped in with 6 kills, but the team's overall hitting percentage of .040 wasn't enough to secure a win.

Later in the evening, Averett faced Oglethorpe in a closely contested match. The Cougars started strong with a 25-22 win in the first set, but Oglethorpe took control in the next three, winning 25-19, 25-21, and 25-23 to seal the match. Graduate student Emma Nash stood out with 11 kills and 3 service aces, while McIntosh added 5 kills. Despite their efforts, Averett couldn't maintain momentum, finishing the day with two tough losses.

The Cougars will look to rebound as they wrap up the Berry College Invitational when they face Piedmont University on Saturday.
