DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University women's volleyball dropped its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference match, falling 3-0 to visiting Bridgewater College on Friday night in the Grant Center.
Although the Cougars lost in three, Averett (4-8, 1-1 ODAC) and Bridgewater (11-2, 3-0 ODAC) battled into extra points in the opening set. After the Eagles inched ahead 17-14, the Cougars fought back to go in front 22-21. Averett had set point before Bridgewater took the final three points to steal the opening set 26-24.
A 10-1 start by Bridgewater in Set 2 swung the momentum into the Eagles' favor as they rolled to a 25-12 win to go up 2-0 in the match. Averett rebounded to battle in a tight third set midway through, but Bridgewater ultimately pulled away at the end, 25-16.

Erin Gray had a team-high 18 digs and senior
Kayleigh Gentry totaled 15 digs.
Averett hosts No. 25 Washington and Lee University at noon Saturday, and the Cougars face non-conference foe Berea College at 4 p.m. as part of a tri-match.
