Women's volleyball falls to No. 25 Washington and Lee, Berea in tri-match

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University's women's volleyball team faced a tough weekend with back-to-back matches, falling to No. 25 Washington and Lee University 3-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play before losing a non-conference match to Berea College, 3-1, on Saturday in the Grant Center.

In their first match on Saturday, the Averett (4-10, 1-2 ODAC) were swept 3-0 by undefeated Washington and Lee. The Generals, now 12-0 on the season, took the sets 25-16, 25-16 and 25-19. Graduate student Emma Nash led the way with 11 kills and four block assists, while junior Rachel Green added seven kills and 10 digs. Fifth-year libero Erin Gray had 16 digs. However, the Cougars were unable to overcome the Generals' strong offense, which hit .284 for the match.

Later in the day, Averett faced off against Berea, where it fell in four sets. Despite a hard-fought effort, Berea edged out the Cougars with scores of 25-18, 25-22, 21-25 and 25-22. Nash once again stood out for Averett with 16 kills and a .400 hitting percentage, while freshman Emily McIntosh had 15 kills. Gray added 29 digs, while junior Brenda Light had 24 assists. The Cougars battled throughout the match and won the third set but couldn't close the gap in the decisive fourth set.
