DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University football fell 36-10 to rival Ferrum College in a non-conference battle of conference foes Saturday on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Â
Averett (2-1) opened with a strong drive down inside the red zone, but the possession stalled and the Cougars settled for a 21-yard field goal by freshman
Mikhail Iakovlev for his first career field goal with 11:08 mark of the first quarter.
That lead held until Ferrum (2-1) connected on a 46-yard touchdown pass to jump in front 7-3 with 6:02 left in the first. The Panthers added a 42-yard field goal early in the second quarter to extend the lead to 10-3, then had another scoring drive that culminated in a 1-yard touchdown run to make it 17-3 with 7:52 left in the half. Ferrum connected on another field goal just before the half to take a 20-3 advantage into the locker rooms.
Ferrum added a 36-yard field and 1-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter to push its lead to 29-3, then tacked on a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Down 36-3, Averett kept fighting. Junior running back
Gaby Soto broke a 33-yard touchdown run with 12:16 to play to get the Cougars back within 36-10.
Soto led Averett on the ground with 76 net yards rushing, while sophomore
Jamahrie Owens had two taches for 67 yards, including a long of 50. Sophomore quarterback
Ethan Ross threw for 156 yards before missing most of the second half.
Fifth-year safety
Seth Harden led the Cougars with nine tackles, while graduate linebacker
Tre' Maxwell had seven. Freshman

The Cougars will face Ferrum again in the season finale, which will count toward the ODAC standings.
Averett has a bye week before traveling to Washington and Lee University on Oct. 5.
