FERRUM, Va. – A four-goal second half thriller went in favor of the opposition, as Averett University men's soccer fell 3-2 to Ferrum College in its Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener on Wednesday night.
Ferrum (4-4-0, 1-0 ODAC) vaulted themselves back into the lead in the 77th minute, as Anthony Ceballos-Medina slotted the ball past the keeper off a loose ball within the penalty box.
Early offensive pressure paid off for the Panthers, as Peyton Rausch elevated Ferrum to a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute with a shot into the left corner.
The Panthers doubled their advantage as the second half resumed, Jadon Brooks scored in the 48th minute. Averett (3-2-3, 0-1 ODAC) got right back into the contest just two minutes later, with a low center score from
Leandre Tyssandier, assisted by
Jonthomas Buckley. The goal marked the freshman midfielder's first since Sept. 3 at Pfeiffer.
An extended lightning delay paused the action, but the contest carried on. Conditions on the field limited offensive pressure from both sides, but the Cougars found an unexpected spark as time began to creep closer to 90 minutes. After the 73rd, defender Jamie Vasquez Sanjurjo booted a long ball from midfield and linked up with an attacking
Oliver Kousholt. He slipped by two defenders, and sent a clinical volley into the left side to knot the game at 2-2.
Averett led in total shots with 11 and shots on goal with seven, including two from both Tyssandier and Buckley.
Tyler Yates made two saves in net.
The Cougars return back home to Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium for the first time in nearly two weeks, welcoming Bridgewater College on Saturday, Sept. 28 for a 2 p.m. conference bout.
