HAMPTON, Va. — Averett University men's wrestling dominated Buena Vista University 48-4 to open the Virginia Duals on Friday, but the Cougars fell short in a 30-15 loss to Division II Frostburg State University in the second round.

Averett will face Elizabethtown University on Saturday for a chance to get to the fifth-place match later in the day.
 
Averett had little trouble against Buena Vista, winning nine of the 10 weight classes. Senior Mason Barrett, ranked No. 3 in the nation, won by fall (2:00) at 125 pounds to start the day for the Cougars. Junior Carter Erickson and junior Braeden Fluke also won by fall at 197 and 285, respectively. The Cougars also got technical fall wins from sophomore A.J. Orlando III at 133 and junior Xavier Swanson at 165 to highlight the win.

Barrett also won by fall with a pin against Frostburg State, while Orlando gave the Cougars a 9-0 lead with his win by am 8-3 decision. However, Frostburg State won the next three weights to surge ahead 12-9. Swanson got a pin at 165 to keep Averett close. The Cougars needed wins at 197 and 285 to sneak out a victory, but Frostburg State took both weights to hold on for the win to advance in the bracket.
