DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University welcomed a tough foe in No. 17 Washington and Lee University to the Grant Center on Wednesday night, and the Generals proved their might, defeating the Cougars 85-30.
Washington and Lee (15-2, 7-1 ODAC) commanded the game from the start, limiting Averett (2-15, 0-8 ODAC) to just six first period points, while only missing six field goals, scoring 35 points en route to a 29-point lead a quarter of the way through the contest.
The Cougars did lower the Generals' offensive output through the last three periods, never scoring more than 20 in each, Averett's low scoring first quarter proved enough for the ranked visitors to prevail at final, elevated to their seventh conference win of the year.
DaiShaundria Giggetts notched yet another scoring mark with 10 or more points this season, with 10 at games' end, along with three rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Junior
Skylar Jones provided a quality statline with eight points, six rebounds and a steal.
Averett trailed Washington and Lee in the steal margin by only one, 9-8. The Cougars only missed one free throw across the contest, nailing four of five from the charity stripe.
The Grant Center sees its second consecutive basketball doubleheader on Saturday, Jan. 25, where the Cougars welcome Randolph-Macon College, receiving votes in the D3hoops.com poll, for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
