Track & field closes out trip to VMI Invitational

LEXINGTON, Va. – Averett University track & field competed in Day 2 action at the Virginia Military Institute Invitational.

Distance runners started the day's track events off as the mile run led the way. Freshman Hunter Moss paced the entries for the men's team. Moss ran a 4:56.68 to finish 54th. Sophomore Gabrielle Griffin represented the Cougars' women's team in the mile run. Griffin posted a time of 6:00.39, scoring a 44th-place result.

In the 400m run, sophomore Ke'Vannio Smith led the entries from Averett. Smith finished in 56th-place with a time of 55.28. Sophomore Hailey Juhasz ran well for the Cougars on the women's side. Juhasz ran to a 36th-place finish, finishing her lap in 1:05.64. Staying on the track, Moss once again led the Cougars, this time in the 800m. The freshman finished 47th, posting a 2:15.71.  Sophomore Azael Quintero follow right on Moss' heels, coming home 48th with a time of 2:15.96. For the women's team, Griffin scored a 42nd-place finish with a time of 2:45.87.

In field events the Cougars entered two competitors to represent the men's team. Freshman Damien Patrick competed in the shot put event, scoring a best throw of 9.97m to place 56th overall. Junior Chris Nelson took center stage in the men's triple jump, posting a 12.82m jump, earning an 18th-place finish.

With the VMI Invitational wrapped up, Averett track and field turns its focus towards the Liberty University Indoor Open on Friday, Feb. 7.
