LEXINGTON, Va. — Averett University football freshman cornerback Joziah Campbell was voted as the 2024 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Defensive Rookie of the Year while also garnering VaSID All-State College Division First Team accolades at cornerback, the organization announced Thursday.

Campbell, who was also the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's Defensive Rookie of the Year, became the fourth Cougar in program history to earn the conference's Rookie of the Year award and the first to do so since Averett joined the ODAC. Campbell, a native of Dumfries, Virginia, led the ODAC in interceptions with six — also a program single-season record. Campbell also finished with 22 tackles, one sack and three pass breakups while also blocking two kicks on special teams. He earned ODAC Defensive Player of the Week once this season. He earned All-ODAC Third Team honors this season.

Campbell is the third Cougar since 2018 to earn VaSID Defensive Rookie of the Year honors, joining Joseph Ledbetter (2018) and Johnathan Terrell (2019).
