ASHLAND, Va. — No. 25 Randolph-Macon College's fast start proved to be too much for Averett University football to overcome in a 77-20 conference road loss on Saturday.
Randoph-Macon (5-1, 4-0 ODAC), ranked in the top 25 in the American Football Coaches Association poll and receiving votes in the D3football.com poll, scored its first three touchdowns on the second play of each of those possession to race out to a 21-0 advantage with 6:19 left in the first quarter against Averett (0-5, 0-3 ODAC).
Down 42-0, Averett's offense put together a 15-play, 77-yard scoring drive that culminated with a 6-yard touchdown pass from redshirt sophomore quarterback
Ethan Ross to senior receiver
Jamahrie Owens to get the Cougars on the scoreboard. After the Averett defense held Randolph-Macon to three-and-out on its next possession, the Cougars' offense struck again. Ross connected with junior
Christian Jones for a 3-yard score to close the deficit to 42-14 in the final seconds of the first half.
The nationally ranked Yellow Jackets continued to add to its lead in the third and fourth quarters to pull away. Averett added an early fourth-quarter touchdown with senior quarterback
Louie De Iulio hitting redshirt freshman
Amontrae Scott for a 2-yard score as the Cougars' lone points of the second half.

Rocco Fazzolari and freshman defensive end
Israel Russell each had eight total tackles, with sophomore defensive end
Ivan Williams getting a sack.
