DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University men's wrestling hosted Randolph College, East Stroudsburg University, and Marymount University for a quad match on Saturday in the Grant Center. Averett defeated Randolph for their first conference victory of the season with a score of 49-6.
During match one against Randolph (0-2, 0-1 ODAC), the Cougars (1-1, 1-0 ODAC) were able to come out victorious in nine of ten weight classes. Junior Adrian Samano, ranked No. 3 in the region, won by forfeit at 125 pounds as well as senior Jacob Jimenez at 197 pounds and senior Jackson Higgins at 174 pounds. Juniors A.J. Orlando III, ranked No. 3 in the region, and Carter Shupert secured technical fall wins at 133 and 157 respectively. Senior Xavier Swanson, ranked No. 3 in the region and No. 14 nationally, won by fall as well as seniors Nolan Gerwitz at 184 pounds, ranked No. 6 in the region, and Carter Erickson in the heavyweight bracket.
The Cougars faced East Stroudsburg (7-5, 1-5 PSAC) for the second match of the day, where they fell 30-12 to the Warriors. Samano won by decision at 125 pounds. Orlando III's technical fall win at 133 pounds was able to give Averett an 8-0 lead over East Stroudsburg before the Warriors took the 141 and 149 weight classes for themselves. Swanson won by major decision at 165 pounds.
For the final match, Averett defeated Marymount University () for their second dual win of the season with a score of 28-15. Samano defeated Marymount's Ian Morales by major decision at 125 pounds along with senior Khalil Mitchell, ranked both No. 10 and No. 17 in nation, at 184 pounds. Shupert and senior Wyatt Parker secured falls in the 157 and 141 weight classes respectively. Senior Jackson Higgins, wrestling two weights classes up, ended his day 2-1 on a decision against Ian Harris from Marymount.
The Cougars continue the action tomorrow when they host the annual Cougar Open beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
