Men's basketball has four score in double figures as Cougars roll past Warren Wilson

DANVILLE, Va. — Sophomore Mason Mitchell scored a career-high 27 points as Averett University men's basketball defeated Warren Wilson College 96-69 in non-conference action on Wednesday in the Grant Center.

Mitchell was one of four Cougars to score in double digits as Averett (6-2) took control of the game midway through the first half and kept Warren Wilson (3-7) at bay the rest of the way. Up 25-13, Averett had to withstand a quick Warren Wilson run late in the period that got the Owls within 34-29 with 3:19 left. Averett pushed its lead back to 41-32 by halftime.

With the help of Mitchell, Averett put away Warren Wilson down the stretch for its second consecutive win and sixth victory in its last seven contests. Sophomore Jackson Sellars also contributed 20 points, while redshirt sophomore Timayahs Bracey had 16 points and junior Terrell Fitzgerald notched a career-best 10 points and three blocks.

Mitchell, who's previous career-high was 21 points, added seven rebounds along with sophomore Zach Skogen as Averett matched a season-high of 38 rebounds as a team. Sellars had a team-high five assists.

The 96 points was the most by Averett since beating Pfeiffer University 99-83 on Jan. 7, 2020.

Averett hosts Johnson & Wales University (N.C.) on Dec. 16 in its final game before the holiday break.
