Women’s basketball dispatches Johnson & Wales (N.C.) for second straight win

DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University women's basketball coasted to a defining win on Monday afternoon, scoring a season-high 90 points in a 30-point rout versus Johnson & Wales (N.C.).

Averett (3-6, 0-2 ODAC) and Johnson & Wales (N.C.) (7-3, 1-0 C2C) kept things tight through over one and a half quarters, before freshman guard Lily Strittmatter took over with eight points in the midst of a 14-3 run near the end of the period. In a flash, the Cougars led 38-30, and closed out the period 6-4, leading 42-36 at halftime.

Averett's defining stretch came with the entirety of the third period, where the Cougars left the Wildcats flat to the tune of a four-point quarter, making just a single field goal. On the other hand, Averett completed a 23-point swing with 11 made field goals and two threes. 10 different Cougars scored at least a point, with Taylor Ray atop the list with six of her own.

By the start of the fourth, the game was practically in reach, as Averett led 69-40. Despite Johnson & Wales only trailing 21-20 in the last period, the home side rode a complete team effort to its highest point total in 2025-26, 90-60 the final score.

DaiShaundria Giggetts led the effort with 15 points on 6-11 field goal shooting, adding on four steals. Strittmatter tied a career-high in points with 12, along with four assists. Kyjana Jordan swiped a game-high five steals, and Crishya Sellers and Jy'Lyia Mizell each recorded six rebounds.

The Cougars dominated the boards with 49 to Johnson & Wales' 36, led in steals with 25 and forced a season-high in turnovers for the visitors with 35.

Averett heads to Meredith College for its last game before the winter intermission, on Thursday, Dec. 18. Start time is set for 2 p.m.
