Men's volleyball drops conference match to Lynchburg, falls to Marymount

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University men's volleyball hit the road on Saturday for a conference match against the University of Lynchburg and a non-conference contest against Marymount University, where the Cougars fell 3-0 in both matches. 

Lynchburg (3-3, 1-1 ODAC) took the first match against Averett (1-7, 0-2 ODAC) 25-21, 25-18 and 25-17. 

The Cougars trailed the Hornets for most of the first set, before Lynchburg extended its lead to 11-5. A kill from freshman Liam Audrain brought the Cougars back to trail 19-21, before ultimately losing to the Hornets in Set 1.

The Cougars kicked off Set 2 with a 2-0 lead before a string Hornets kill changed the score to 5-3 in favor of the home team. Averett was able to keep pace behind Lynchburg for the majority of the second set before falling 25-18. 

Averett hit the ground running in the third set, taking the lead 8-7, before an attack error by Averett tied the two teams. The Cougars kept the score close throughout the entire third set before the Hornets were able to take the match 3-0.

Freshman outside hitter Yerai Collazo recorded 10 kills while sophomore Shaun Freeman had 11 assists for the Cougars' offense. On the Cougars' defense, Freeman had five digs while junior libero Anibal Lopez trailed with four. 

During the second match, Averett faced Marymount (3-5, 0-0 CVC) for a non-conference matchup, where the Cougars fell 25-14, 25-18 and 25-17. 

Collazo collected five more kills in the second match for the Cougars' offense, benefiting from 12 assists from Freeman. On the defensive side Freeman added eight digs, while Lopez had seven. 

The Cougars are back home Wednesday to face Eastern Mennonite University for a conference clash at 6:30 p.m.
