FREDERICKSBURG, Va.
— Down to the last singles match of the afternoon, the No. 38 Averett University women's tennis gave it its all, but lost a 4-3 nail-biter at No. 27 University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon.
After the Mary Washington (2-0) took the doubles rubber by winning two of three matches, Averett (0-1) battled through grueling singles matches to try and force its way back into the swing of things. The Eagles went up as large as 3-0 with just a singles victory needed to clinch, but the Cougars clawed back with consecutive wins from No. 3
Dilara Sultanova and No. 4
Jennika Jaison.
Harshri Asher followed suit to tie it up a 3-3, making the No. 6 match between Averett's
Siddhi Khot and Mary Washington's Sophia Broomall a winner-take-all. In dramatic fashion, both players split the first two sets, and went the distance in the third to a deciding tiebreak. Khot lost in close fashion, as the Eagles narrowly squeaked by the Cougars.
Even with losing the doubles rubber, one duo still claimed a win, as the No. 3 tandem of Elisa Batterman and Sultanova took down Mary Washington's Evie Snyder and Linda Dimitroff.
The No. 38 Cougars take on Gettysburg College to close out the opening spring weekend in Fredericksburg tomorrow morning. Matches are set to begin at 9:30 a.m.
