No. 37 women’s tennis drops contest to No. 17 Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Close matches were had between No. 37 Averett University women's tennis and hosts and No. 17 ranked Christopher Newport University, but it was the Generals who ended with the upper hand, beating the Cougars 6-1 on Sunday morning.

Ravaka Ramanantoanina and Brenda Poulakidas got the matinee started by winning at No. 2 doubles for Averett (2-2), but Christopher Newport (3-3) took the next two to win the doubles rubber. Elisa Battermann and Dilara Sultanova kept it close with Samantha Robertson and Eva Taylor at the No. 3 flight, but lost 7-5 as singles approached.

The Cougars did claim a point at No. 4 singles, as Jennika Jaison took down Robertson of the Captains in three sets, taking the decider 7-5. Two more matches went the distances, but the home team prevailed by rubbers' end, sealing the ranked win.

Averett opens both ODAC and home play at the Averett Tennis Courts on Saturday, Mar. 1, hosting Randolph-Macon College for a 1 p.m. start.
