RALEIGH, N.C. — Averett University softball edged Meredith College 4-3 in Game 1, then put together a dominant 12-3 performance in six innings to sweep the Avenging Angels in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday.
In the opener, Averett (4-2) trailed 3-1 going into the final inning. After loading the bases with the help of two infield singles and an error, sophomore
Kadence Woodlief delivered a three-run double to push the Cougars in front 4-3. Averett held Meredith (2-4) in check in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.
That momentum carried into Game 2 as Averett plated seven runs in the second inning. Seniors
Hannah Jones and
Angela Rodriguez each had two-run singles as part of the big inning. The Cougars' lead grew to 10-0 in the top of the fifth. Although Meredith scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, Averett added two more runs in the sixth to end the game early.
