DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University baseball fell to Shenandoah University in a Friday afternoon conference clash.
Averett (13-4, 5-1 ODAC) fought hard early but eventually succumbed to the relentless offensive efforts of Shenandoah (14-6, 6-1 ODAC). The Hornets, receiving votes in the national baseball rankings, walked away with a 9-2 victory.
Shenandoah earned an early lead, capitalizing on a string of hits to secure a 2-0 advantage. The Cougars rallied in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game. Senior
Preston Robbins kicked things off with a double into the ever greener right field grass at Owen-Fulton Field. Sophomore
Drew Skinner advanced Robbins to third, and Sophomore
Tyler Lowe knocked in Averett's first run. The Cougars put together a two-out rally to tie the game. Senior
Nick Romano kicked it off with a single, and senior
Mason Williams followed suit with a base knock to tie the game.
Shenandoah would go on to pull away from that point, as the Hornets put together a string of seven unanswered runs to reach the 9-2 final scoreline.
Williams tallied the Cougars lone RBI in the game, while five Cougars tallied a single hit, including Robbins' two-bagger. Averett's pitching staff fanned six Hornets, with freshman
Ean Amerson accounting for five.
It's a quick turnaround for Averett, as the Cougars have the chance for revenge against Shenandoah at noon Saturday.
