Men’s lacrosse drops home conference outing to Bridgewater

DANVILLE, Va. – A lopsided second quarter was the eventual catalyst for visitors Bridgewater College, as Averett University men's lacrosse had its win streak snapped on Saturday afternoon, falling 17-2 at the home confines at Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.

Offensive threat Emmett Wood got the game's scoring underway early on for Averett (4-7, 1-3 ODAC), tallying his 21st of the season with an assist from Tigran Ceesay. A slower-moving first period than previous outings, it took a near eight minutes until another, but from Bridgewater's (4-7, 2-2 ODAC) side.

Owen Cogan knotted the game at one, and things seemed to be approaching a standstill as the second quarter loomed. In true buzzer-beater fashion, the Eagles scored just before the clock zeroed out to take a 2-1, and shifted momentum toward the visitors.

Bridgewater took the second period by storm, asserting its might with a nine-score quarter, and went into halftime up 11-1.

The Eagles tacked on two more netters in the third, until Brayton Powers ended the drought for Averett with his 15th of the spring campaign. Bridgewater was on top, 13-2, as the final quarter loomed.

The Cougars played better defensively down the stretch, but the Eagles rounded out its second conference win with three more goals to finalize the 17-2 score.

Connor Boyd led Averett in ground balls with five, and four Cougars tallied a caused turnover. Robbie Isenhour tallied 25 saves in front of net.

No mid-week game for Averett awaits next, as the Cougars head to in-state Winchester the following Saturday, Apr. 5 for an ODAC contest versus Shenandoah University. First faceoff is set for 4 p.m.
