Men’s tennis knocks off Division I Hampton

DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University men's tennis added a stellar win to its non-conference resume, getting a huge win over Division-I Hampton University, 4-2, on Saturday morning at the Averett Tennis Courts.

Averett (8-2) started off with two momentum-altering doubles wins to claim the first point. The No. 3 match, with Florian Bert and Alex Donnelly, ended in a 6-4 win over Hampton's (3-10) Donte Armbrister and Marko Stoilkovski, as the Cougars tallied a 1-0 early lead.

The lead tripled to 3-0, as Florian Bert earned a victory, winning his first set tiebreak over Marko Stoilkovski, before his opponent retired due to injury. Prabjeet Chandhok followed with a win over Kevin Jorquera, 6-4, 6-2. The Division-I Pirates made the dual interesting by posting triumphs at No. 1 and No. 6 singles, respectively, to cut Averett's lead to 3-2.

Jayden Mukkaladyil eased any tensions for the home team, earning his singles win over Yanozie Amadike to clinch the win, as the Cougars got their eighth dual win of the year.

Averett heads back into its ODAC slate, heading to Salem to take on Roanoke College on Tuesday, Apr. 1, in a make-up match from March. Start time is set for 2:30 p.m.
