Softball drops doubleheader with No. 14 Randolph-Macon

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University softball kept both games close, but No. 14 Randolph-Macon College prevailed with wins of 4-0 and 7-3 over the Cougars on Saturday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at Cougar Field.

In the opener, Randolph-Macon (20-2, 6-0 ODAC) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning with an RBI groundout, then added another run in the fourth thanks to an error. Averett (11-13, 2-4 ODAC) kept it a two-run game until Amanda Lanyon hit a two-run homer in the seventh to double the lead to 4-0.

Randolph-Macon ace Gracie Ellis limited Averett to just one hit — a single by sophomore Carson Bradsher in the third inning — to keep the Cougars' offense in check.

In Game 2, Randolph-Macon scored two runs in the first inning and extended its lead to 3-0 with an RBI double in the third. The Yellow Jackets tackled on three more runs — all unearned — in the fifth inning to push their lead to 6-0, then tacked on another run in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly.

Down 7-0, Averett's offense broke through in the sixth as sophomore Mackenzie Newcomb smacked an RBI double to left-center, and sophomore Kadence Woodlief followed with an RBI double to nearly the same spot to get the Cougars within 7-2. Averett added another run in the seventh on an infield RBI single from junior Hannah Zabik. Although the Cougars had two runners aboard, their comeback attempt fell short.

Averett's offense finished with eight hits in Game 2, including a 3-for-4 effort from Newcomb, who also had a triple. Zabik also had multiple hits.

The Cougars face No. 5 Virginia Wesleyan University on Sunday at 1 p.m.
