Softball falls to No. 5 Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC doubleheader

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University softball lost a pair of games to No. 5 Virginia Wesleyan University on Sunday, falling 6-2 and 10-0 in five innings at Cougar Field.

In the opener, Virginia Wesleyan (21-1, 8-0 ODAC) struck first with a two-run single in the top of the first inning. After adding a run in the third and two more in the top of the fourth to go up 5-0, Averett's offense broke through as sophomore Kadence Woodlief had a hard single off the pitcher to score junior Hanna Zabik from third to get the Cougars within 5-1.

The Marlins tacked on another insurance run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to push their lead to 6-1. Averett (11-15, 2-6 ODAC) made some noise in the bottom of the seventh, getting a pair of runners on. Sophomore Carson Bradsher plated freshman pinch runner Adrianna Winters with an RBI single up the middle to pull the Cougars within four runs, but Virginia Wesleyan induced a game-ending groundout to get out of further trouble.

Averett totaled six hits off Virginia Wesleyan starter Lauren Bible, who improved to 12-0 this season.

In Game 2, the nationally ranked Marlins jumped on the Cougars early for three runs in the first and five runs in the second inning to build an early 8-0 advantage. Virginia Wesleyan added two more runs to pull away.

Averett plays University of Lynchburg on Senior Day on Saturday, April 5, at Cougar Field.
