DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball fell to Guilford College in midweek ODAC action.
Averett (17-11, 9-8 ODAC) let Guilford (20-12, 7-10 ODAC) grab an early lead and was never able to claw back into contention en route to a 13-2 loss on Wednesday.
The Quakers mounted an early 5-0 advantage thanks to timely hitting and a few assists from the windy day in Danville, Virginia, as routine fly balls were anything but in the blustery conditions. Averett mounted its best offensive effort in the bottom of the first inning. The Quakers recorded a quick two outs in the inning before the Cougars pieced together a sequence of hits to drive home two runs. Graduate student
Nolan Maccabe and redshirt sophomore
Trevor Testerman hit back to back singles, while senior
Preston Robbins walked to set the table for junior
J.C. Barry. Averett's catcher roped a single into left field to drive in two Cougars and draw the score to 5-2 after one.
Guilford kept Averett quiet from that point on, as the Quakers combined efficient pitching with brilliant defensive effort to blank the Cougars until the game reached an early end after the seventh inning.
Barry led Averett throughout the game, putting in solid work behind the plate while tallying three hits in his four at bats. Seniors
Kevin Zischke and
Mason Williams, along with Maccabe, all accounted for two hits of their own. Barry's two first inning RBIs were the only for the Cougars in the game.
On the mound freshman
Corbin Mickle turned in the best outing of the day for Averett. Mickle pitched one inning for the Cougars, holding Guilford's explosive lineup hitless while striking out two Quakers.
Averett is back in action on Saturday, April 19 to take on Randolph-Macon College for a conference doublheader set to begin at noon.
