VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Averett University men's lacrosse fell behind early, as an offensive surge later was not enough to best Virginia Wesleyan University, losing 18-7 on Wednesday afternoon.
Virginia Wesleyan (7-9, 4-5 ODAC) jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first, before
Emmett Wood snatched one back for Averett (4-12, 1-8 ODAC).
As the second period got underway, the Marlins extended the lead back to five early on, but freshman
Zachary Hulbert netted the Cougar's second to bring the deficit right back to four, 6-2 with over 10 minutes until the halftime break. Virginia Wesleyan were able to score three more towards the tail end of the period, however, taking a 9-2 lead into intermission.
Hulbert made his afternoon a multi-score effort with his second as the third period carried on, but Averett still tailed 11-3 halfway through events.
The Cougars were able to outscore Virginia Wesleyan in one of their better quarter outputs this season, as
Tigran Ceesay scored a hat-trick of goals in the fourth, along with Hulbert completing a hattrick. The Marlins' three scores still kept them at a distance, as the home side won 18-7 at final.
Ceesay lead the team in points with four, with the aforementioned hat-trick. Hulbert recorded the second hat-trick of his young career in a three-point effort.
Giovanni D'Amico,
Ty Pearson, and Wood were the leaders in ground balls, scooping up a pair each.
Zac Coleman did his part in the faceoff circle, recording seven successful attempts in 18 tries, and
Angel Pascual Roman caused two turnovers.
Robbie Isenhour saved 12 behind net.
Averett finishes the 2025 spring campaign at Hampden-Sydney College on Friday, April 25. Start time is set for 5 p.m.
