SWEET BRIAR, Va. – Averett University women's tennis battled Sweet Briar College for playoff positioning on Saturday afternoon, and took a major step in the right direction with a 7-0 win over the Vixens.
Averett (13-4, 8-1 ODAC) ran into a gauntlet to start doubles.
Elisa Battermann and
Dilara Sultanova in the third slot got events started with a 6-2 win over Sweet Briar's (14-6, 8-2 ODAC) Atty Bestwick and Maggie Minton.
Jennika Jaison and
Siddhi Khandelwal were pushed to the brink in the set tiebreak, but came out on top 9-7 to prance over Alex Guilarte and Isadora Lima.
Already having clinched a point,
Brenda Poulakidas and
Ravaka Ramanantoanina also competed hard at No. 2, and won their 10th match as a duo, also 9-7 in the set tiebreak.
With doubles out of the way, the Cougars blitzed the Vixens in singles. Capped off by a well-played match from No. 3 player Sultanova, defeating Lima 6-2, 7-5, Averett capped off an impressive sweep over one of the ODAC's strong squads.
Averett finishes the regular season back at the Averett Tennis Courts, with its senior day against Randolph College. Start time is set for 11 a.m.
