LEXINGTON, Va. – Averett University men's tennis truly played up to the competition at No. 20 Washington and Lee, but lost by a close 4-2 margin on Sunday afternoon.
Averett (10-4, 5-1 ODAC) got the best of Washington and Lee in doubles, attaining its first win in that regard against the Generals for the first time since 2023. Averett played spoiler at No. 2 and 3, with the latter of
Alex Donnelly and
Florian Bert besting Ryan Good and James Kurani, attaining the all-important first point.
Washington and Lee quickly got the lead back in singles with wins at No. 1 and 3.
Prabjeet Chandhok won his third straight, and 10th overall of the season with a dispatching of the Generals' Eli Hirshberg, 6-3, 6-4 to tie the rubber back at two.
Turning the tides would come at No. 2, with
Jaeden Mukkaladyil and Will Kistler battling in a match that surpassed the two-hour mark, and nearly went the distance in the third set, as well. Clawing back from a set down, Mukkaladyil almost sniffed victory, before Kistler snatched the final few games to take the set, 6-4, and a 3-2 lead for the home team.
Playing until decision, the Generals ended action at No. 5 singles, with Heys Parker defeating
Rafael Jodas, 6-4, 6-4.
With the away slate concluded for the regular season, the Cougars return back home to the comforts of the Averett Tennis Courts for three more ODAC matches. The first of which comes next on Saturday, April 12, with Virginia Wesleyan University coming down for a 10:30 a.m. matinee.
