LYNCHBURG, Va. — Averett University women's lacrosse fell 20-8 to the University of Lynchburg during conference play on Wednesday.
The Hornets (11-3, 5-2 ODAC) were first to get on the board, scoring six goals within the first three minutes of play. The Cougars' (3-4, 2-4 ODAC) veteran senior Faith Bowlin fired her first shot into the back of the net with 11:19 left in the first quarter.
Bowlin opened up the second quarter by firing her second goal of the day into the back of the net. Lynchburg responded by tacking on another goal, but not before Averett took back control when sophomore Cayden Holdsworth scored her 25th goal of the season. Senior Celia de Diego was able to score another goal to make the score 14-4 in favor of the Hornets going into halftime.
Lynchburg opened up the second half with a goal before Holdsworth returned heading into the last 15 minutes of play. Holdsworth continued to dominate, scoring two more goals in the fourth quarter before the Hornets claimed their fourth straight conference victory.
On offense, Holdsworth lead the Cougars with five goals. Senior Candace Johnson contributed one assist.
Defensively, the Cougars recorded six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Junior Caitlin Alperstein made six saves in goal for Averett.
The Cougars are back home on Saturday when they face conference foe Ferrum College at 1 p.m.
