DANVILLE, Va. – Gritty as a game as could be,
Diego Giffuni's second half strike decided the final outcome, as Averett University men's soccer knocked off Division-II Shaw University, 1-0, on Friday evening to begin its 2025 fall campaign at Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
The opening 45 minutes teetered in the Bears' favor. Shaw controlled more possession, tallying seven shots to just Averett's (1-0) three. Despite having more touches on the ball, the Cougars' backline held strong, including a save from senior netminder
Anibal Lopez.
The tides shifted immediately as the page flipped to the second half. Drawing more fouls in its own offensive zone, Averett commanded pressure over the visitors, and the home team's best chance came just outside the penalty box in the 67th minute. Giffuni lined up to take the free kick, and belted the ball into the top right corner, sending the Daly Field crowd into a frenzy.
The Cougars were able to hang on at every moment they could, thwarting any attack from Shaw to leave the Bears scoreless after 90 minutes.
Averett's opening win marked the second consecutive year winning its opening contest. Lopez kicked off his season behind net with a one-save clean sheet.
The Cougars hit the road next to conclude August, as Averett rematches William Peace University on Sunday, Aug. 31. Kick-off from Cary, North Carolina is set for 2 p.m.
