BREVARD, N.C. – Averett University women's soccer lost to Brevard College in a tight defensive slugfest, coming to a close at 1-0.
Averett (1-3-1) fell behind Brevard (4-0-0) in the 29th minute and was never able to grab an equalizer thanks to the Tornados stifling defensive efforts.
The Cougars put up a defensive effort for the history books just to keep the game close, led by the final line of defense, junior goalkeeper
Tiia Chrons. Chrons crept close to an all-time Averett record as she amassed 24 saves, standing tall in front of Averett's net in a nearly unblemished masterpiece. As their goalie stood tall at the opposite end of the pitch, seniors
Isobel Evans and
Gianna Minafo threw shots on net in the late stages of the game, but the Cougars finished just short as the final whistle blew.
Averett returns to the field for a match with Guilford College on home turf after a week to regroup, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20.
