GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University men's golf finished 15th at the 54-hole Gate City Invitational hosted by Greensboro College Tuesday at Forest Oaks Country Club. The Cougars shot 10-over-par during Tuesday's final round to finish at 37-over for the two-day event.
Averett was led by freshman
Chase Myers, who jumped 18 spots on the final day with a 1-under 71 – one of only 11 golfers in the 96-person field to shoot under par in the third round. He finished with a 6-over 222 to place 37th overall on the par-72, 7,020-yard course.
Sophomore
Benjamin Afzelius shot 1-over for the second consecutive round to finish at 8-over, while freshman
Lukas Newton shot 6-over during the final round to end at 11-over. One shot back was senior
Miguel Rodriguez Lamana at 12-over, and sophomore
Zach Always shot 24-over to round out Averett's five participants.
Sewanee, the University of the South, held onto the lead over the final 18 holes to edge Carnegie Mellon University by one stroke at 3-under. Huntingdon College placed third at 1-under.
On the individual leaderboard, there was a four-way tie for the top spot with Carnegie Mellon's Joshua Wong, Oglethorpe University's Jackson Hiller, Sewanee's Elias Baker and Washington and Lee University's Jonathan McEwen all finished at 6-under.
