Women’s volleyball falls to Maryville, Meredith on Day 1 of Raleigh Crossover Tournament

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University women's volleyball traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina on Friday for Day 1 of the Raleigh Crossover Tournament, where they fell 3-1 to both Maryville College and Meredith College.

Averett (1-5, 0-0 ODAC) fell to Maryville (5-0, 0-0 CCS) 25-16 in the first set, before bouncing back with a 25-22 win in the second thanks to a kill by senior Rachel Green. The Scots conquered the next two, winning 25-19 and 25-23 to close out the match. 

Junior Tahani Villines led the Cougars with 10 kills, while Green, junior Allie Wilkerson, and sophomore Emily Phillips had six a piece. Senior setter Dayton Moore picked up 16 assists for the Cougars' offense, while fellow setter freshman Adeline Fortenberry had 13. 

On the defense, junior Sydney Mounce had 14 digs while sophomore Kyleigh Rains had 10.

Averett faced Meredith College (4-3, 0-0 USA South) for their last match of the day. The Avenging Angels took the first two sets with scores of 25-21 and 25-15, but the Cougars were able to clutch another third set win with a score of 25-21. 

The Cougars took an early lead in the fourth set, but an Avenging Angels kill was able to tie the two teams up. The teams were neck-and-neck throughout the remainder of the set, with Meredith closing out the match 27-25. 

Villines was able to add on 16 more kills and 16 digs to her day, while Green, Mounce, and Wilkerson had eight kills each. Moore added 38 assists. Junior Kadence Woodlief recorded 13 digs on the defense.

The Cougars return to the Raleigh Crossover Tournament Saturday when they face Oglethorpe University at noon and William Peace University at 2 p.m.
