Women’s volleyball splits matches with Oglethorpe, William Peace to close out Raleigh Crossover Tournament

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University women's volleyball wrapped up their trip to Raleigh, North Carolina by splitting matches with Oglethorpe University and William Peace University on Saturday. The Cougars fell to Oglethorpe 3-1 and defeated William Peace 3-2. 

Oglethorpe (4-3, 0-0 SAA) took the first two sets 25-17 and 25-18, but Averett (2-6, 0-0 ODAC) fought back to take the third set 25-22. The Cougars took an early 5-0 lead in the fourth thanks to kills by juniors Allie Wilkerson and Sydney Mounce and senior Rachel Green, but the Petrals caught up quick, securing the match with a score of 25-20. 

Mounce led the team with 14 kills, while senior Dayton Moore led with 19 assists. Freshman setter Adeline Fortenberry added 12 assists. 

Sophomore libero Kyleigh Rains was able to halt the Petrals with 25 digs, while Moore trailed with 21. 

For their final match of the tournament, the Cougars faced the Pacers of William Peace University (3-5, 0-0 USA South) for a thrilling match, where Averett won with scores of 20-25, 25-20, 25-14, 19-25 and 15-12. 

William Peace took an early lead in the match, taking a 25-20 win in the first set. The Cougars trailed the Pacers throughout the beginning of Set 2, but a kill by Green gave the Cougars the lead, taking them to their first victory of the day with a score of 25-20. 

The Pacers gained momentum in the fourth set, taking the win 25-19 and tying the teams 2-2. The Cougars got a hot start in the fifth before the Pacers came up on their heels. The two teams remained tied until Averett secured the 15-12 win, adding another hard-fought victory to their season. 

Green tacked on 12 more kills, while Mounce added 11 and junior Tahani Villines had 10. 

Moore had 24 assists and sophomore setter Megan Litman recorded 15. 

Rains added 22 digs to the defense, Villines contributed 13 and junior Kadence Woodlief had 12. 

The Cougars are back in North Carolina when they face Guilford College for the first conference match of the season on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
