DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University's men's soccer team competed in its closest match of the season but ultimately fell 4-1 to Eastern Mennonite University.
Averett (0-8, 0-3 ODAC) entered halftime tied 1-1 with Eastern Mennonite after sophomore
Edgar Carbajal scored his first goal of the season to open the scoring.
Eastern Mennonite (4-7-1, 1-2 ODAC) answered when sophomore Hector Ortiz scored in his second consecutive game to even the score before halftime.
In the second half, Kane Kiernan scored early for the Royals, which proved to be the difference.
Averett continued to battle late in the second half as sophomore
Bailey Frye recorded his first shot on goal of the season.
Despite the loss, Averett turned in its best defensive performance of the season, allowing a season-low two goals. HC Bradley Bizzell's squad has shown progress over its last four games.
Averett concludes its four-game homestand Friday, Oct. 9, when it hosts Shenandoah University.
