CARY, N.C. – Averett University men's lacrosse scored a season-high in goals, but did not muster enough to defeat William Peace University at WakeMed Park, as they fell 13-7.
Averett (0-4) quickly got in front with
Gabe Gallegos at the helm, before William Peace (5-0) replied with the equalizer five minutes later. That score was just one of many in a period that featured six more scores that were split among the teams. Two from senior
Emmett Wood and one more from Gallegos helped to keep the score tied at 4-4.
The Pacers took their first lead with two netters early in the second quarter. Wood then completed a fast hat-trick with a score to cut the Cougars' deficit in half, and the game turned into a stalemate thereafter. Averett's defense came out to play, with multiple opposing shots forced away from goal, and various turnovers kept score, 6-5 in favor of William Peace.
The third period was all Pacers, as three different home players forced shots into the net to raise William Peace's lead to four. Two more goals from Gallegos and Boyd in the fourth weren't enough to match the Pacers' four, as their surge was enough to move past Averett.
Wood and Gallegos tied for the team lead in points with four, as each player scored a hat-trick and provided an assist.
Cory Habick had a day in defense, with eight ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Robbie Isenhour had 13 saves in net for the Cougars.
With a long road trip over, Averett returns back to Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium for the rest of March on a six-game homestand, beginning with Methodist University coming to town on Wednesday, March 4. Start time for the Cougars' Wendell Scott game is at 6 p.m.
