DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University men's lacrosse lost its last non-conference game of 2025-26 on Wednesday night to Marietta College, 10-4 at Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Averett and Marietta traded goals on either end to start, as freshman
Gavin Dean netted his second of the year to get the Cougars on the board. The Patriots' Sam Leininger equalized, then got an assist on their second goal after sophomore defenseman
Cory Habick got his first goal of the year.
At 2-2, Marietta went on a 4-0 run to triple its lead with strong offensive play.
Emmett Wood and
Zachary Hulbert teamed up for the Cougars' third score with a man-up opportunity to cut their lead down to three, but the deficit shot back up to four after Leininger scored another goal for the Patriots, their seventh, to go into the halftime break.
The Patriots added on three more scores in the second half to Averett's one, being Wood's second of the contest. Marietta went on to conclude the contest and the 10-4 win.
Both teams were elite in clears, with the Cougars a pristine 16-17 throughout the contest. Averett trailed Marietta by only two in ground balls, 31-29.
Wood led the Cougars in goals and points with two on either end. Four separate Averett players recorded four ground balls.
Giovanni D'Amico and
Matthew Clark had two caused turnovers. Sophomore
Robbie Isenhour recorded his seventh straight start with 10 or more saves, with 16 against the Patriots.
The Cougars hop back into ODAC games for the remainder of spring, first with its next game hosting No. 4 ranked University Of Lynchburg on Wednesday, March 18. First faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
