BRIDGEWATER, Va. — Averett University softball dropped both games of a conference doubleheader to Bridgewater College on Saturday, losing 5-0 in Game 1 and 3-0 in Game 2.
In Game 1, the Cougars (12-6, 0-2 ODAC) finished with five hits on the Eagles (14-4, 4-0 ODAC) but couldn't score. Freshman Kennidy Kirby led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a walk, while sophomore Adrianna Winters also went 2-for-2. Junior Kadence Woodlief added a hit, while the team drew five walks. In the circle, senior Hannah Zabik pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and five runs with four of them being earned and five strikeouts.
In Game 2, Averett was held to just three hits. Kirby, junior Mackenzie Newcomb and Zabik each recorded one hit. Sophomore Brianna Brooks added a walk, but the Cougars struggled to generate the offense. In the circle, freshman Cora Liggon started and allowed three runs over 4.1 innings, while freshman Delani Straughan pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief with two strikeouts.
Averett hosts No. 15 Christopher Newport University for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 2:30 p.m.
