Men’s tennis suffers close defeat to No. 36 Washington and Lee

DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University men's tennis took an early lead in its Sunday afternoon match versus No. 36 Washington and Lee University at the Averett Tennis Courts, but came up short in singles to lose 5-2 to the Generals.

Averett (5-5, 5-1 ODAC) took it to Washington and Lee (6-9, 5-0 ODAC) in doubles. Despite dropping the first match, sophomore Florian Bert and senior Alex Donnelly took down Justin Ilie and Sanjheev Rao, 6-4, as the no. 3 match went down to the wire. Senior Sam Egui and sophomore Rafael Jodas went the distance in the set tiebreak to down Sahil Arora and Pearce Lane, and go up 1-0.

The Cougars earned their lone singles win with Lucas Fiandra, as he defeated Ilie 6-0, 6-2. However, Washington and Lee commanded the remaining matches to flip the dual in its favor for the comeback.

Averett goes to nearby Lynchburg for its next ODAC faceoff on Saturday, Apr. 4 versus Randolph College. Start time is set for 1 p.m.
