Men’s tennis inched out at Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. – In a very familiar situation this early in the season, Averett University men's tennis battled to the very last singles match with their opponent, this time in Salisbury University. The Seagulls pulled out the late win to down the Cougars, 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.

Averett (1-4) went toe-to-toe with Salisbury (4-1) in doubles, and ended up getting the sweep to win the first dual point. The pairs of Alex Rudy and Lucas Fiandra, Florian Bert and Alex Donnelly, and Sam Egui and Rafael Jodas all won their respective matches in convincing fashion.

The Seagulls won at the first and second spots, but Bert knocked off Maas Jacobs, 6-3, 6-2 to level the dual at 2-2. Roger Pamies Petit with the start at No. 6 singles defeated Chase Catullo 6-4, 7-5 to take a team 3-2 lead.

Salisbury tied the matchup at three when Aron Bursztyn edged out Jodas, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Fiandra and Bobby Stabile were the last two standing at No. 4, and split the first two sets, 6-3 for the Cougars and 7-5 for the Seagulls. The final set went to a tiebreak, but Stabile ended up winning it 7-1 to take the match for the home team.

Averett dips back into ODAC play with a road bout at Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday, March 14. Start time is set for 1 p.m.
