Men's volleyball splits with Lynchburg, Warren Wilson at home

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University men's volleyball dropped a four-set ODAC match to Lynchburg, 3–1, to kick off a pair of Wednesday night contests before defeating Warren Wilson College. 

The Cougars (5-21, 0-13 ODAC) fell behind early as Lynchburg took the first two sets, 25-18 and 29-27. Averett responded with a 25-23 win in the third set to extend the match before Lynchburg (14-10, 10-5 ODAC) closed it out with a 25-19 victory in the fourth.

Sophomores Yerai Collazo and Liam Audrain led Averett with 11 kills each in the first match, while senior Nicholas Breen added nine. Freshman setter Luke Brown recorded a team-high 33 assists, and freshman Chuck Freedman led the Cougars defensively with 11 digs.

To close out the night, Averett defeated Warren Wilson (2-14) with set scores of 25-17, 21-25, 25-18 and 25-17. 

Averett started strong by taking the first set, but Warren Wilson responded to win the second. The Cougars bounced back in the final two sets, controlling play and closing out the match.

Collazo led Averett with 11 kills and added 10 digs. Audrain finished with seven kills, while Breen had six. Brown dished out 27 assists and added three service aces. As a team, Averett recorded nine aces and 10 blocks while holding Warren Wilson to a low hitting percentage.

The Cougars host Roanoke College and Shenandoah University for a conference tri-match on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
