GREENSBORO, N.C. – It was an eventful night for the Averett University men's lacrosse team at Guilford College on Wednesday night, as the Cougars scored their season high in goals with a win over the Quakers, 11-4 at Armfield Athletic Center.
Averett's (1-13, 1-7 ODAC) first win of 2026 came at an opportunistic night, as senior attacker
Emmett Wood scored his 77th goal in the navy and gold, which surpassed Connor Taff '24 as the program's all-time leader in goals.
The Cougars had to wait for that moment, but did open up the nightcap through sophomore
Cory Habick in the first quarter. Wood's record-setting score was the visitor's second, at the 10-minute mark. The period was dominated by the senior, as he already reached hat-trick status to affirm a three-goal lead, 5-2.
Guilford (2-10, 1-7 ODAC) was outmatched in the second quarter as well, only netting a score to the Cougars' three. Junior
Connor Boyd got his second, and was joined by freshman
Gavin Dean and senior
Cameron Shadduck to build Averett's 8-3 lead at the half.
The third quarter was turnover-prone for both sides, but Averett came out the better, as senior
Luis Martinez extended the Cougars' lead to six. Although the Quakers netted their fourth in the last, the other team on the US-29 route got the last laugh before the buzzer. Wood scored his fourth, and Martinez got his second to bring a conclusion to a successful night on the box field.
Wood's four goals and four points were both game-highs. Junior defender
Giovanni D'Amico ball-hawked the Quakers all night to the tune of eight ground balls and five caused turnovers. Senior
Angel Pascual Roman had four caused turnovers of his own.
The team as a whole succeeded in clears, 25 for 28, won 11 out of 19 faceoffs, caused 11 turnovers, and had 40 ground balls. Sophomore goalie
Robbie Isenhour had a 14-save night in net, only allowed four scores and had a .778 save percentage.
Averett heads back to Danville for its home finale versus Hampden-Sydney College on Wednesday, Apr. 22. Start time is set for 6 p.m.
