DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball dropped a back-and-forth 11-inning contest to Randolph-Macon, 10-8, on Saturday afternoon.
Averett (12-19, 5-12 ODAC) rallied from an early deficit with a three-run third inning, highlighted by a two-run double from sophomore Nathan Michalowicz and an RBI single from junior Tyler Lowe. The Cougars added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, then took a 7-4 lead in the seventh on a two-run laser over the left field fence by Lowe.
Randolph-Macon (19-11, 10-6 ODAC) answered late, scoring four runs in the ninth inning to tie the game before pushing across two runs in the 11th to secure the win.
Lowe led Averett with three hits and three RBIs, while freshman Landon Mitchell added four hits and an RBI. Michalowicz also drove in two runs for the Cougars.
Sophomore Ean Amerson delivered a solid start on the mound for Averett, tossing five innings and striking out three Yellow Jackets.
Averett baseball is back in action tomorrow for Game 2 against Randolph-Macon after darkness forced the second half of the doubleheader to be pushed to Sunday at 3 p.m.
