DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University softball picked up a strong doubleheader sweep over Randolph on Saturday to celebrate Senior Day, winning 11-0 and 12-4 to improve to 21-15 on the season.
In Game 1, Averett (21-15, 6-10 ODAC) jumped out early with two runs in the first inning and broke the game open with eight runs in the second. The Cougars finished with 11 runs on 12 hits while holding Randolph (3-27, 1-15 ODAC)Â to just four hits.
Junior Mackenzie Newcomb and freshman Kennidy Kirby led the offense, combining for four RBIs and five runs scored. Sophomore Brianna Brooks added a two-RBI hit in the first, and senior Hannah Zabik helped at the plate and in the circle, throwing a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits over five innings to secure the win.Â
In Game 2, Averett stayed hot at the plate, scoring two runs in the first inning and five more in the second. The Cougars totaled 12 runs on 15 hits.
Junior Carson Bradsher led the way with four hits and three runs, while Newcomb added a home run and four RBIs. Seniors Kadence Woodlief and Sarah Lysohir also contributed key hits, with Lysohir hitting a home run.
Freshman Cora Liggon earned the win in relief, allowing just one hit over the final three innings.Â
The Cougars are on the road Tuesday when they face the University of Lynchburg for a conference doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
