DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University softball swept Sweet Briar College in a doubleheader on Saturday at Cougar Field, winning 2-0 in Game 1 and 8-2 in Game 2.
In the opener, senior
Hannah Zabik threw a complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits from the Vixens (18-22, 7-13 ODAC) to lead the Cougars (24-16, 9-11 ODAC). Averett scored in the fourth inning when junior
Mackenzie Newcomb doubled and later came home on a sacrifice fly by senior
Kadence Woodlief, then added another run in the sixth on an RBI from freshman
Hailey Akers.
In Game 2, the Cougars' offense broke things open with a six-run third inning, highlighted by multiple RBI hits from players including Newcomb, junior
Brianna Brooks, senior
Kailey Gates and senior
Sarah Lysohir. Gates finished with three RBIs and three hits as Averett totaled 13 hits in the game. Freshman
Cora Liggon earned the win in relief, holding Sweet Briar to one run over 6.2 innings. The sweep moved Averett to 24-16 overall on the season.
