BURLINGTON, N.C. — Top-seeded N.C. Wesleyan College beat fourth-seeded Shenandoah University 16-6 on Sunday to force a deciding game for the USA South Conference championship later in the day.

N.C. Wesleyan (23-16) pulled away late with six runs in the top of the eighth inning.

The Bishops and Shenandoah (31-7) were scheduled to play the championship game 30 minutes following the completion of the first game.

N.C. Wesleyan exploded for three runs in the top of the second inning, with two of them coming on Justin Batts’ single through the left side. Shenandoah, which dominated the Bishops 17-5 in seven innings earlier in the tournament, got two of those runs back in the bottom half of the second inning. Scott Van Dusseldorp knocked a one-out homer and the Hornets added another run on Jon Holcomb singles.

The Bishops and Hornets traded three runs in the third, but Shenandoah couldn’t keep up after that.

N.C. Wesleyan’s Luke Williford and Travis Beausoleil each finished with three hits and three runs batted in. Beausoleil and Justin Rahm each had a homer for the Bishops.
