BURLINGTON, N.C. — Second-seeded Methodist University powered its way to a 14-2 victory in eight innings over seventh-seeded Greensboro College in the opening round of the USA South Conference Tournament on Thursday at Burlington Athletic Stadium.
Methodist (24-9) advances to play No. 3 seed Shenandoah University at 10 a.m. on Friday at Burlington Athletic Stadium. Greensboro (10-26) will face No. 6 seed Averett in an elimination game at 9 a.m. on Friday at Elon University's Latham Park.
The Monarchs used a five-run fourth inning to pull away from the Pride. Xavier Mayo and Tripp Lancaster each had RBI singles to push Methodist's lead to 5-0. Brian Inghram added a three-run home later in the inning to push the Monarchs' advantage to eight runs.
Greensboro scored its only runs in the fifth inning. Vince Grasso scored on Grant Kelley's sacrifice fly to right field. The Pride added another run when Ryan Summerford scored ahead of a non-conventional double play.
Methodist, which got one run back in the bottom of the fifth, ended the game an inning early with five more runs in the eighth.
Designated hitter Matt Quick led all Methodist players with a 3-for-5 day at the plate. Quick, Inghram and Trey Such each had at least two hits and three RBIs apiece. Two of Such's RBIs came on a homer in the third inning. Lancaster, Shawn Lovette and Tyler Younger also had multiple hits for the Monarchs.
Greensboro's Bobby Amato and Tyler O'Neill accounted for four of the Pride's five hits.
Methodist right-hander Kurt Kelly (7-2) struck out six in an eight-inning complete game.
