J.D. Shaw has been at the helm of the Cougars’ offense since 2002, having joined the team with head coach Mike Dunlevy's original staff. He serves as the assistant head coach, as well as the offensive coordinator and the quarterbacks/ running backs coach.

Shaw’s offense has consistently been rated one of the top in the USA South, and 2006 was no exception when the Cougars won the conference title. The Cougars were ranked second in total offense managing 373.5 yards per game on the season, and third in scoring offense with 32.0 points per game.

Shaw continued to help develop great players, as well. In 2006, Averett placed eight offensive players on the All-Conference team, including two to the first team. Shaw recruited and coached Averett's first Offensive All-American selection, running back Kyle Wilson. Jeff Hughley, a standout wide receiver and favorite target of Shaw’s play book, plays professional football in the Arena Football League.

That trend continued in 2009 when seven offensive players earned all-conference honors. In 2010, six of his offensive players were named to the all-conference team.

Before leading the Cougar’s offense, Shaw coached at Waynesburg College, where he was part of one of the most successful eras in that program’s history. At Waynesburg, Shaw was a receiver and tight end coach, and then worked his way to offensive coordinator in five years. He was a part of four consecutive winning seasons and a President’s Athletic Conference Championship in 1998. In 1999, Shaw’s offense was ranked 20th in the nation in points per game with 35.6.

Before Waynesburg, Shaw was the offensive coordinator and secondary coach at Waynesburg Central High School. While in college, Shaw worked as a student coach at West Virginia University. During his time at WVU, he worked with quarterbacks and receivers and was part of two bowl teams (the 1989 Gator Bowl and the 1988 Fiesta Bowl).

Shaw holds a B.S. in education and an M.S. in childhood motor development from WVU. Shaw, his wife Kelly and their kids Nick and Taylor reside in Danville.
