Mo Chakir joined the Averett tennis program as an assistant coach in August 2014.
While as an assistant at Averett, he has coached one women's USA South Conference Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, a combined six all-conference players (men's and women's) and 12 conference players of the week over the past two seasons. In 2016, the men's team earned has high as a No. 19 ranking in the South Atlantic Region while finishing 14-4 overall. The mark was an eight-win improvement from the previous season. Chakier helped the 2016 women's team achieve more wins than the previous three years combined.
A native of Rabat, Morocco, Chakir gained coaching experience as a tennis pro for four years at the Future Stars Country Club in Southhampton, N.Y. He also served as a tennis coach at Winaukee Summer Camp in Moultonborough, N.H., and at the Nike Tennis Camp in Boston. He is a Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) certified coach. Chakir helped out PTR CEO Dan Santorum demonstrating on court drills during the 2014 ITA Coaches Convention in Naples, Fla. He also served as a hitting partner and worked closely with several top juniors in Morocco during ITF and Futures tournaments.
Chakir graduated from NCAA Division II Newberry College in May 2014 with a degree in business administration and a minor in political science. He played as high as No. 2 and as low as No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles for three years for Newberry, earning 40 wins in three spring seasons. Chakir was an ITA Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2011 and was on the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll in 2012.
Chakir is working toward his master's in business administration from Averett.
