Colleen McTygue was hired as the Averett University women's soccer head coach in June 2018.
In her first season with the Cougars, McTygue guided a young squad to a 5-11-1 overall mark and a 3-4 record in league play to qualify Averett for the first round of the USA South Conference Tournament. In addition, McTygue produced one all-conference selection.
Prior to Averett, McTygue totaled 19 years of head coaching experience at the Division III level. McTygue guided the women's soccer program at the State University of New York at New Paltz from 1997-2016, taking a break in 2003 to give birth to her son.
McTygue is the ninth coach of the Averett women's soccer program since it began play in 1993. She took over a program that has a history of success over the past decade, including a USA South Conference championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2012, along with two USA South Player of the Year selections and one Academic All-America recipient.
While at SUNY New Paltz, McTygue accumulated 128 career wins, seven SUNYAC conference tournament appearances, including the 2011 championship as her team advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 before falling to the eventual national champion. McTygue received SUNYAC Coach of the Year honors that season. She also earned SUNYAC Coach of the Year accolades in 2004 and was the SUNYAC Award of Valor recipient in 2005.
During her time at New Paltz, McTygue also served as assistant director of athletics and senior woman administrator for five years, as well as the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills coordinator and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) advisor during her tenure. She was on the NCAA men's and women's soccer rules committee for four years, including chairing the committee from 2013-14.
McTygue holds several coaching certifications, including a USC national goalkeeping Level 1 license, an NSCAA advanced national coaching license, an English Football Association coaching certificate and a Coerver Coaching Association coaching certification.
In addition to her sideline experience at New Paltz, McTygue coached at Skidmore College in 1991 and at the University of Albany from 1992-93. She then left coaching to play professionally in London in the English Women's National League for the Millwall Lionesses from 1993-94 and Arsenal in 1996. She also played with Sutton United in 1995.
Collegiately, McTygue played her first two seasons at the junior college level at SUNY Canton from 1988-89 before finishing at Division III Plattsburgh State University from 1990-91.
McTygue graduated from Plattsburgh State in 1991 with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. She earned her master's degree in educational administration with a concentration in higher education leadership from New Paltz in 2006.
