Box Score

WINCHESTER, Va. — Averett freshman Kenny Hart scored the Cougars' first 13 points as they got off to a good start in a 76-66 victory over Shenandoah University on Sunday.

Hart, who finished with a career-high 25 points, hit a pair of layups and three 3-pointers to give the Averett (10-8, 3-2 USA South) a 13-7 lead less than six minutes into the game. The last of those 3-pointers was the start of a 16-2 run by the Cougars, who led 26-9 midway through the half.

After taking a 42-29 advantage into the locker rooms, Averett led by double digits for most of the second half.  Shenandoah (6-11, 1-3 USA South) closed the gap to as little as six twice with under two minutes remaining, but the Cougars went 7-for-8 from the foul line to maintain a comfortable lead.

Hart hit five three points as he blew past his previous career high of 17 points, which game against Piedmont College on Nov. 22. Senior Jonathan Rumley finished with a double-double after scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Junior Jeff Wehling contributed nine points off the bench.

Stevie Johns paced Shenandoah with 13 points and Nick Brown added 12 points.

Averett returns to action on Thursday at home against N.C. Wesleyan at 7:30 p.m.
